Think of your favorite food. Imagine the first time you had it.

Can you see it? Can you smell it? Do you
crave it?

Is it full of warmth and indulgence? Does it remind you of a Thanksgiving long ago? Your grandmother? A hot summer day? A little restaurant back home? A cold and snowy night by the fireplace?

Ahhh, how dull and monotonous life would
be without the blessing of food.

Don't believe me? Try for a moment to
conceive what it would be like, if rather than eating to fill our nutritional need, we ate little pellets that provided us with the fuel necessary for survival.

Food is culture. Food is family. Food is an
industry. Food is hospitality. Food is memory. Food is a coping agent. Food is romantic. Food is a joy. Food is business. Food creates friendship. Food fosters memory.

Some people go through life trying to eat less of it, some go through life trying to find enough of it to feed their family. Some people like all they can get their hands on, some will hardly touch it. Some won't eat food if it's touching what
surrounds it, others like to mix it all. Food is a blessing, food is a curse. Different foods claim to help you lose weight, others will help you gain it.
People often define themselves by what they eat… or what they don't eat. People go without food before the Lord, and people over-consume in a contest before
an audience.

Without food, what would people do on a business outing? What would they prepare
at Auntie's house? Where would college students work? How would we take communion?
Where would they go on a date? What
would they do on a holiday?

Food is so much more than nourishment.

Remember this the next time you meet
someone for coffee and sip that latte a little more slowly. Let's remember and treasure our time around the dinner table, and let the warmth of the gravy fill our mouths. Let's appreciate that birthday cake that was baked with a special flavor just for us, and that dinner that someone
else paid for.

Could it be that we are daily surrounded by, and oblivious to, one of God's greatest gifts to us?
